Shopping possibilities in Madrid are limitless! There are many major shopping districts where you will find huge range of shops selling Spanish and international brands. Large department stores and outlet shops can be found around Gran via and the Puerta del Sol. If you are looking for more upmarket and designer brands such as Prada, Armani, Burberry, Gucci and boutiques selling local brands, then you need to head towards the Northwest area Paseo de la Castellana in the Salamanca district, Retrio Park in Calles Serrano, Goya and Velazquez. The area of Calle de Fuencarral is flooded with shops selling fashionable trendy clothes, shoes, accessories and antique sellers along the winding narrow streets of the Rastro flea market.

In recent years the development of shopping centres/malls (centros commerciales) has made it easy for shoppers to purchase everything under one roof. Furthermore, large shopping malls (Centro Commerciales) are scattered all throughout the city including Europe's largest shopping mall "Xanadu" which even includes an indoor ski and snowboard park. It is worth visiting some of the well-known shopping centres and the small speciality shops hidden in Madrid's back streets.   • El Corte Ingles - Department Store
Madrid's El Corte Inglés stores can be found at the following metro stops:

El Corte Inglés" (The English Cut) is the biggest chain of stores found all over the Spain and here you can find everything. As a good decent department store, they sell every conceivable thing you can think of. As a general rule, they are slightly more expensive than the average shop in Madrid. Almost all stores also have their Hypermarket called (Hypercor) at the lower level of the stores where prices are much cheaper and competitive, here you will find many international products but they are generally more expensive then Spanish products.

  • Xanadu Shopping Mall

Xanadú is one of the largest shopping centres in Madrid. There are more than 250 stores open year-round. This is an American style huge Shopping Complex, here you will find plenty of shops, entertainment, fast food, cinema, two indoor ski slopes one for beginners and one for experts, go-kart racing track, mini amusement park, bowling alley, preschool, cinema and more.

This three storeys shopping centre used to house the offices of right wing newspaper ABC, hence the name. At ABC you can buy almost everything, here you will find fashion outlets and boutiques, gift shops, hairdressing salons, wine merchants, cafes, restaurants and more.

This shopping complex offers visitors more than 200 shops 25 restaurants/cafes and cinema. Located in the north of the city, this shopping mall also plays host to a number of independent stores and supermarkets with their own buildings e.g. Ikea, Carrefour, Decimas. Plaza Nortez is very stylishly decorated utilising some of the past elements and 21st century technology with large chandeliers, marble floors, Venetian-style lamps, and an impressive 35-metre dome.

Sexta Avenida takes its name from the complex´s location at the side of the A-6 highway. This strategic loaction means that its 100 plus shops can be reached by Car, Bus or Train. Sexta avenida has created a typicla "Terraza" (terrace) inside the centre in which you can enjoy Spanish food whilst undercover all year round!



  • El Rastro, Ribera de Curtidores
Directions: A big area between Metro "Puerta de Toledo", Metro "La Latina" and Metro "Antón Martin".

El Rastro is where small businesses, market stalls and anyone with a table or suitcase come to sell just about anything. This popular flea market is held on Sundays and holidays from about 10.00-14.00 selling clothes, electrical goods, souvenirs, paintings and more. You can find many Bargains here, as most goods are sold second hand. Even if you don't plan to buy anything, is a good way to spend Sunday mornings wandering around and perhaps try some delicious TAPAS. Be careful of your wallet and handbags, as it is a paradise for pickpockets.
